Export Jute & Natural Fibre from India

The bulk comes from the West Bengal belt — Hooghly, Howrah, 24 Parganas (North), Nadia and Murshidabad — because raw jute fibre is processed in mills here and a long-standing workforce of weavers, dyers and screen-printing units sits within a tight radius of Kolkata port and Haldia. Secondary clusters for hand-twisted baskets include Katihar and Samastipur in Bihar, and parts of coastal Odisha. Sourcing from this belt gives buyers shorter sampling lead times and direct access to both mill-loom and handloom capacity.

The two biggest price drivers are raw jute fibre grade (tossa, white TDN or mesta, tracked weekly on the Jute Balers Association spot rate) and the labour content of the finish — plain mill-loom tote vs. hand-blocked print vs. embroidered or patchwork panel. Stock promo totes typically start at 500–1,000 pcs MOQ, but custom-dyed, custom-printed or custom-sized pieces push MOQs to 1,000–3,000 pcs because each lot needs separate dyeing, screen setup and QC. Jute is also bulky, so 20' FCL vs 40' HC utilisation sharply changes per-piece landed cost.

Check weave density and evenness (no thin patches or slubs), bartack or cross-stitch at both ends of every handle (single-stitch is a defect), and edge finishing — overlock, fold-and-stitch, or whip-stitch, because raw-cut jute frays fast. For printed or laminated pieces test colour fastness to crocking and water, and on the inside lining watch for dye bleed. Finally, smell the sample: a sour or musty odour means jute was dried below ~12% moisture and the lot will arrive mould-stained in humid containers — a very common Jute Beleghata-side reject reason.

There is no single GI covering all jute goods, but the Jute Mark India (JMI) logo, administered by the National Jute Board under the Ministry of Textiles, certifies that a product contains 100% Indian jute fibre of declared grade and is the standard authenticity mark Indian Customs and large retail buyers recognise. A few cluster-specific GI applications are emerging (notably around Bengal and Odisha hand-twisted baskets), but for mainstream export the JMI label with its registration number on the commercial invoice is the provenance stamp to insist on. Ask the exporter to share the JMI licence copy before booking.

Indian factories routinely handle custom GSM (typically 250–400 gsm for shopping totes), custom dimensions, custom-dyed base cloth, screen-printed or digital-printed artwork, branded woven/PU labels, leather or cotton-webbing handles, cotton/canvas linings, zips, inner pockets, and PU or wax lamination for water resistance. Heavier custom work — patchwork appliqué, hand embroidery, bamboo or brass hardware, brass-bead trims — pushes sample lead time to 3–4 weeks and raises MOQ because it is hand-done. Always seal a golden sample with the factory, because jute fibre batch variation can shift print registration and dye uptake between lots.

Jute shopping bags usually classify under HS 4202 92 or 4602 19 depending on construction; jute rugs and fabrics fall under 5805 00 / 5806 31, and a Kolkata Customs House Agent should confirm the exact subheading at the time of shipment. GST is zero-rated under LUT (Letter of Undertaking) filed in Form GST RFD-11 — the exporter ships against an LUT-backed invoice with no IGST paid and no refund claim. Jute is highly hygroscopic, so pack is poly-liner inside HDPE bag inside corrugated carton with silica-gel desiccants, and any wooden pallet or dunnage must be ISPM 15 heat-treated/fumigated with a phytosanitary certificate to avoid destination-port holds.
